The Stack / Chat Assistants

Microsoft Copilot

02 Decisions

Yes if your operation runs on Microsoft 365 — Copilot working inside your actual mail, spreadsheets, and meetings does what no external assistant can reach. If you're not a 365 shop, there's no reason to enter this ecosystem for the AI alone; the assistant seat market is stronger outside it.

The job in the stack

The Microsoft-side seat: AI woven through the 365 suite, for operations that live in Outlook, Excel, and Teams.

The honest read

What works

  • +Reads your actual work context — mailbox, calendar, SharePoint, Teams
  • +Excel and Outlook integration automate the drudgery layers of office work
  • +Tenant-grounded answers with enterprise governance controls
  • +New Business Standard + Copilot bundle (~$23.50/user) beats buying suite and Copilot separately

What breaks

  • Value collapses outside the 365 ecosystem — it's suite AI, not standalone AI
  • Licensing matrix is genuinely confusing; budget a careful read before buying seats
  • Raw model quality per dollar trails dedicated assistant subscriptions

Use it for

  • 365-native businesses automating email, docs, and meeting workflows
  • Excel-heavy operations wanting analysis in-place
  • IT-governed environments that need tenant boundaries on AI

Skip it if

  • ×Your operation runs on Google Workspace — Gemini is the same play on that side
  • ×You want the best pure assistant — that comparison is Claude vs ChatGPT

Questions operators ask

?My Copilot Pro subscription stopped renewing — what replaces it?

Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/mo is the individual replacement: Copilot in the Office apps for the account holder, plus desktop Office and the storage. If a team relies on it, buy M365 Copilot Business instead ($21/user, or ~$23.50 bundled with Business Standard) — that is the version grounded in your company tenant's mail, files, and meetings, which is the whole reason to pay for Copilot rather than a standalone assistant.

What changed

  1. Copilot Pro is gone. It closed to new customers Oct 1, 2025 and existing subscriptions stopped renewing after Aug 1, 2026 — our record still listed it as a live $20/mo individual plan. Replaced with Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/mo (Copilot in Office for the account holder, desktop Office, up to 6TB storage) and kept Copilot Pro as a marked-retired row so anyone arriving from an old subscription knows where to go. Business $21/user, Business Standard bundle ~$23.50, Enterprise $30/user, E7 $99/user all re-confirmed unchanged. FAQ rewritten — it asked a question that no longer has an answer.
  2. July 1, 2026 pricing reset applied: the $18/user Business promo ended June 30 (our prior record said Sept 30 — Microsoft moved it), standing rate is $21/user annual. New bundles launched: Business Standard with Copilot ~$23.50/user, Business Premium with Copilot ~$32/user. Enterprise standalone $30 unchanged. Broader M365 suite prices also rose July 1 (Business Standard $12.50→$14, E3 $36→$39).
  3. Added to the stack (Microsoft-side seat). Verified: Copilot Pro $20, M365 Copilot Business $18/user promo (through Sept 30), Enterprise $30/user, E7 bundle $99/user (May 2026).
